Hill Stations in Kerala

Hill stations in Kerala offer you an opportunity to spend your vacations amidst clean and fresh air of the hills. On your Kerala tour you can visit the hill stations of Mattupetty, Munnar, Nelliyampathy, Palakkad, Ponmudi, Wayanad, Idduki, Kannur, Kasargod and Kozhikode. Munnar

Munnar is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, Kundala. 1600 m. above sea level, this hill station was the summer resort of the British Government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes, and holiday facilities make this a popular hill station

Thekkady

The very sound of the name conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hill and spice scented plantations. Here, in the crisp, cool air of the Western Ghats you will experience the most enchanting holiday. Periyar forest of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India, and spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great opportunities for treks and mountain walks. A cruise through the waters of Periyar Lake around which the wild -life sanctuary is situated, offers a soul - stirring pleasant experience. The Thekkady sanctuary is one of the best in the country for watching and photographing wild life.

Wagamon

This hill resort, situated 1,100 meters above sea level, 75 km east of Kottayam, forms the focal point of a massive tourism development project envisaged by the Kerala Eco-tourism Development Society.
Called "World Class Hill Resort at Wagamon", the project will cover all the important areas such as anchor resort, eco-lodges vacation houses, camp sites, lakes, promenade, holistic healing center, planters' sports club, multipurpose cultural theatre, tourist information center, conservation research institute, civic hall, boarding school, botanical garden, spice garden, fruit orchard and boating, sailing and rock climbing center. Construction work is on at several points, especially at the sites of hotels, resorts and educational institutions. The work of Ananya Hills Resorts and Rejuvenation Center is almost complete. The existing facilities include five cottages, dormitory, kitchen, conference hall, and yoga and meditation center, gliding training and trekking facilities. The rejuvenation center is called Ayushhida Ayurvedic Center. The second phase of the project is expected to commence soon.
Wagamon is well known for the inspiring beauty of its hills. A chain of three hills- Thangal hill, Murugan hill and Kurishumala - represents the three major religions and stand as lasting monuments of religious harmony.

Nelliyampathy

This fascinating hill station is at a height of 467 to 1572 m above sea level. At least 10 hair pin bends have to be negotiated on the ghat road that passes through the breathtaking evergreen forests of the Sahya Ranges. Seethakundu at Nelliyampathy offers a panoramic view of about one third of Palakkad

Lakkidi

Tucked away in the picturesque Wayanad region of Kerala, Lakkidi Hill has an elevation of 700 meters above sea level. Undulating peaks, silver streams and luscious forests sprinkle magical powder and beautify the entire area of this Kerala hill station. Lakkadi in Kerala receives world's second highest degree of rainfall.

Ranipuram

A beautiful and enchanting mountain terrain that is located about 750 meters above the sea level in The Kasargod district, 85 kilometers away from the town is Ranipuram. What make it famous are the trekking trails through the lush evergreen forests and grasslands of the area. Earlier called Madathumala, It was renamed as Ranipuram by the local settlers, after the 'Virgin Mother'. The verdant virgin greens of Ranipuram, an ideal place for nature lovers and bird watchers, merge with the forests of Karnataka. There are many trekkers who prefer to venture on a tour to Ranipuram, which might become an important hill station in Kerala as well as a significant eco tourism destination in the years to come.

Ponmudi

Ponmudi is connected to Trivandrum by a narrow winding road which offers a scenic view on the way to Ponmudi. The climate is always pleasant and it serves as a base for trekking and hiking. The tea-gardens here are also famous.
Other attractions near Ponmudi include Golden Valley and a number of rivulets and rapids, some even across the road. Located in a rich forest area, this whole place may be of interest to those who are interested in tropical vegetation. There is also a rich wildlife around these hills. Golden Valley is a sneak-peak offered to the beauty of the hills. It is an access-point to the river Kallar. Well-rounded pebbles, lush green trees, the cool water, fishes and the sheer wilderness of the park enthralls the visitor.
Another attraction in the region is Agasthyarkoodam which is one of the highest peak in the Western Ghats and the highest peak (1868 m) in the district. This peak is famous for its wilderness, and can be accessed only with permission from the Forest Department. Meenmutty Falls is also a famous attraction in the range.

Charalkunnu

This piquant picnic spot is a picturesque hill station from where the breath-taking areal view of the beautiful valleys and other low lying lands can easily knock any one out of one’s senses. The camp house here offers a feel-at-home lodging.

Ramakalmedu

Ramakalmedu is 16 km from Nedumkandam, Thekkady-Munnar Road. Rolling green hills and the fresh mountain air make Ramakalmedu and enchanting retreat.

The hilltop also offers a panoramic view of the picturesque villages of Bodi and Cumbum on the eastern slope of the Western Ghats.

Distance 45 km from Idukki, 40 km from Thekkady and 75 km from Munnar.

Elaveezhapoonchira

Easily accessible from Pala town Elaveezhapoonchira is a picturesque picnic spot located in the most of beautiful hillrocks.

 

Peerumed

Situated Situated amidst rubber, tea, coffee, and pepper plantations is this dainty little hill station of Peerumed, an ideal stopover on the way to Thekkady. Surrounded by rolling hills and valleys, Peerumed is well known for its waterfalls, open grasslands and delightful trekking trails. This pleasant hill station was once of the summer retreat of the Maharajas of Travancore

Attappady

A beautiful synthesis of mountains, rivers and forests, Attappady is of great interest to anthropologists. This is the habitat of many tribes like the Irulars and Mudugas. The Malleeswaran peak is worshipped as a gigantic Sivalinga by the Adivasis who also celebrate the Sivarathri festival with great fervour. A PWD Rest House, a VIP Guest House and a few private hotels offers accommodation at Agali.

 

Dhoni

It takes a three hour trek from the base of the Dhoni hills, to reach this reserve forest area with its small, beautiful waterfall. This hill country is the delight of trekkers. The community hall at Kalikatty is used as a camping base for trekkers.

Peruvannamoozhi Dam

The picturesque dam sight has a crocodile farm and birds sanctuary here. Boating facilities are also available here

Chembra Peak

At 2100 m above mean sea level. Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad and is an ideal area for trekking

Pythal Mala

This enchanting hill station situated 4,500 ft. above sea level near the Kerala - Karnataka border, is rich in flora and fauna. It is a six Km trek to the top of the hills.

Ezhimala

The beautiful beach here has a hillock nearby (286 M high). A Naval Academy is being developed here.

Agasthyarkoodam

Agasthyarkoodam, the spectacular peak in the Western Ghats rises to a majestic 1890 m in the form of a sharp cone. A haven of rare herbs and medicinal plants, its slopes are a breathtaking sight when they transform into colourful glades of the 'Neelakurinji', a flower which blooms only once in twelve years.

Women are not allowed up the peak. The aborigins here believe that sage Agasthya, a mythological character who lived here was a confirmed bachelor, hence they dislike the presence of strange women. The season from December 2'nd week to February is advocated for trekking for which a forest pass has to be obtained from the Wildlife Warden, Forest Dept., P.T.P.Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram.

Devikulam

Devikulam is a dainty town, sixteen kilometers southwest of Munnar. It consist of irresistibly green slopes touching the sky at a thousand metres and its silent clusters of slender red and blue gum trees.

Mattupetty Hill Station

Famous for its Indo-Swiss livestock project, Mattupetty is situated at a height of 1700 m and is just 13 km from Munnar. There are over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle at the specialized dairy farm and visitors are allowed into three of the eleven cattle sheds at the farm. The Mattupetty Lake and Dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot.

Nearby is the Kundala tea plantations and the Kundala Lake, both tourist attractions. Boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam on speed launches and slow speed motor boats are available.
