About Kerala beaches

Kerala is the land of coconuts and backwater also famous for its exotic Beaches. Beaches in Kerala are among the finest beaches of India. Kerala seaside is lined with sandy beaches, rocky promontories and coconut palms that definitely merit a visit in every tourist itinerary. Some most beautiful beaches in Kerala are Kovalam beach, fort kochi beach, Varkala beach, Kappad beach and many other beaches.

Kovalam Beach

Located 16 km south of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) city, Kovalam is a world-famous beach resort, which has been a favorite spot for tourists since 1930s. This beach has lovely coconut palms fringe the golden sands. Foreigners throng Ayurvedic parlors, yoga and meditation centers, that have sprung up all over the place.

Kovalam Beach consists of three successive small crescent beaches; the southern most known as Lighthouse Beach, is where most of the visitors spend their time. The middle beach is called Hawah. Each morning this beach acts as a base for the local fisherman. The northern most beaches, Samudra, are least affected of all by the changing times. It is dotted with few rudimentary wooden fishing vessels.

The palm-fringed bays of Kovalam in secluded coconut groves, promise a relaxed stay. The unforgettable image of Kovalam is that of the coconut-palms-lined high rock promontory that cuddles the calm and wide expanse of the blue waters.

In the evening the quiet atmosphere of the place is enlivened by Kathakali performances, the classical dance-drama of Kerala.

Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha beach is quite a popular tourist spot, known to provide relaxation in the district of Alappuzha (Alleppey). The pier, which extends into the sea here, is around 140 years old. Blessed with nature's green beauties such as lagoons, vast lakes and numerous fresh water rivers, Alappuzha is a natural wonderland of Kerala state.

The Alappuzha (Alleppey) beach is spectacular. At one end are the dense palm groves that are so characteristic of Kerala's landscape. It has a long sandy beach. For the entertainment of visitors there is a Vijaya Beach Park and an old lighthouse nearby.

Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya beach park add to the attractions of the beach. The Vijaya beach park consist of picnic spot with children's park & boating facilities.

Cherai Beach

45 kms from Cochin City, this lovely beach bordering Vypeen Island is ideal for swimming. Dolphins are occasionally seen here. A typical Kerala village with paddy fields and coconut groves nearby is an added attraction

Varkala beach

South India is never really cool, but pleasantly warm in winter. So, tourists usually visit Varkala beach during the month of October, as it is cool and secluded. Varkala is 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 37 km from Kollam. Varkala beach is famous for mineral springs and a fantastic massage, so don't forget to bring aromatherapy massage oil and sun protection. The mineral springs here are said to have curative properties. The massage technique has been a closely guarded secret for thousands of years, but for many tourists it's a welcome revival from the toils of the road.

Varkala is an important Hindu pilgrim center. The 2000-year-old Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Center are the two main attractions of Varkala Beach. A dip in the holy waters of Varkala beach is believed to pure the body and the soul of all the sins hence the name 'Papanashini' (destroyer of sin) for this shore.

At the break of dawn following the new moon in the Malayalam month of 'Karkidakam', thousands offer 'Vavu Bali', a ritual believed to help the souls of ancestors rest in peace.

Shanghumugham Beach

This is a favorite haunt of sunset viewers. The beach is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) airport and Veli Tourist Village.

Kappad beach

This is the historic beach where Vasco da Gama landed on the 27th of May 1498 with 170 men in three vessels. The rock-studded beach is locally known as Kappakadavu. An interesting feature of the landscape is the sprawling rock that protrudes into the sea. The temple on the rock is believed to be 800 years old

Thangasseri Beach

5 km from Kollam town, this seaside village of historic importance has the ruins of an Old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18 th century. The Thangasseri lighthouse is open to visitors from 1530-1730 hrs

Beypore

Ancient Ship Building Center
The old world charm of this ancient shipbuilding center near Calicut in north Kerala is enchanting. Here, the time stands still as the specialist craftsmen design and shape "Uru"s (traditional vessels). During the heydays of Beypore, the fame of Urus had spread far and wide and Arabs made a beeline to this coastal town. Khalasis, who are the traditional shipbuilders here, are amazing with their ship building knowledge and craft. The client, often an Arab, gives the specifications and his needs.
No design is drawn, and the plan of the Uru is conceptualized wholly in the mind of the master craftsmen. And log-by-log, each component comes together like a giant jigsaw puzzle and the final product is truly breathtaking. And to think that nothing was planned on paper, but the whole designing and intricate measurements and calculations were done entirely in the mind is truly astounding. A fledging wood industry thrived in Beypore ship building activity. Now, past its prime, the wood industry is just a shadow of its former self. Still huge logs can be found floating down the river and is reminiscent of its glorious past.

Thirumullavaram Beach

Thirumullavaram Beach is located at 6 km north of kollam, kerala. Thirumullavaram beach is filled with coconut palms, ideal for early morning walks. You can see the fisherman venture into the sea for their catch of the day. Thirumullavaram beach is very well connected by road and offers good facilities.

Dharmadam Island

A small Island full of coconut palms and green bush extending to 5 acres 100 meters away from the main land at Dharma dam. The island (private land) is a beautiful sight from the beach. Permission is required to enter into the island from its owners. It is located 15 kms away from Mahe.

Pathiramanal Beach

Pathiramanal Beach is 14kms from Mahe. A long clean beach, its enchanting ambience invites you to swim. Sunbathe or just lounge around. Black rocks protect Muzhappilangad from the currents from the deep, making its shallow water a swimmers paradise. Muzhappilangad is Kerala's only drive in beach, which is about 5kms long. From Muzhappilangad you can see the Dharmadam Island (Pacha Thuruth) just across the Arayakkandy River, a remarkable conjunction of beach and island. It’s around 15 km. South of Kannur and only 8 kms From Thangassery. A long clean beach its enchanting ambience invites you to swim sunbathes or just lounge around. Its Kerala’s only drive-in beach, one could drive the entire length-4 kms

Ezhimala Beach

The beautiful beach here has a hillock nearby (286 m high). Carved stone pillars and an ancient burial chamber can be seen at the foot of the hills. The hills are noted for rare medicinal herbs. A naval academy is being developed here. Permission is required for entry.

Marari Beach

Travel 60 Km south of Kochi (Cochin) and you will find looking at one of the most beautiful beaches in India. Marari Beach in Kerala India is a pristine beach located between Kochi and Alappuzha and is truly breathtaking. Miles of clean sand, rustling palm fronds, and the sound of waves splashing on the seashore. Lie back and feel you're in paradise on Marari beach while on Kerala tours with Kerala Backwater.
Marari Beach Kerala,Marari Beach Resort The name Marari is derived from the nearby fishing village of Mararikulam. You can see the daily routine of the local fisher folk as they take their boats out to sea and catch fish in a manner that remains unchanged through time. The nearby coir making workshops are another fascinating insight into local culture. Coir is made from the husk of the coconut and is used to create many useful items such as mats and brushes. Enjoy a visit to the beautiful Marari Beach and its nearby attractions while on Kerala tours with Kerala Backwater.
